Kenner Kids

Had Jillian been aware that there were bid assistance programs available, she may not have found herself sitting at the computer with her heart racing a mile a minute at two o’clock in the morning.  She had become obsessed with winning a vintage spirograph set on eBay.  After placing several bids throughout the evening, she ended up losing every auction in the last few seconds.  She was certain that this final auction would be the one in which she would finally win a version of the spirograph toy that looked exactly like the one that she used when she was a kid.

The recent preoccupation with a spirograph had begun about a week ago when her cousin Candace had come to visit.  Jillian had been recording her thoughts in a journal just two days before Candace was due to arrive.  While contemplating the concept of vibrational frequencies, she was surprised to find herself doodling familiar designs on the page.  Formulating her thoughts around a personal understanding toward the energy field of a physical being, she suddenly recalled the spirograph patterns that she loved to draw for hours on end.

“If everything on the planet vibrates,” she thought to herself, “there must be specific patterns that we can associate with the way our energy moves.”

She imagined that if these energy patterns that were produced by all living things could be envisioned, they might look something like the intriguing spirograph designs that she used to draw when she was a kid.

“I wonder if they still make those,” she thought.

Jillian vaguely recalled buying some reasonable facsimile for her daughter several years ago.  It was called a SpiroTot, and it was nothing like the original version that Jillian herself had once used.

Mildly intrigued with her memories of drawing spirograph patterns, Jillian attempted to draw a few versions on the pages of her journal, but they were not at all as precise and perfect as the ones that she had once created with the real deal.

“Spirograph designs = Energy patterns” she wrote in big letters across the top of the page in her journal.

Two days later, when Candace showed up with a piano bench cushion that she had fashioned for James, Jillian was dumbfounded when she noticed that the fabric that Candace had used was decorated with an authentic spirograph pattern.

“Are you kidding me?!” she looked at Candace with wide eyes.

“Do you like it?” Candace asked with a smile.  “I noticed during my last visit that James was using a beach towel under his butt when he played the piano.  I thought I would surprise you both with a proper cushion for the piano bench.”

“Yes, yes, it’s wonderful!” Jillian stumbled through a quick and half-assed appreciative remark for her cousin’s astute observation and thoughtful gift.  “But it’s a spirograph pattern!”

“I came across it while shopping at the fabric store,” Candace beamed.  “The colors seemed perfect for your decor.”

“But it’s a spirograph pattern!!” Jillian repeated with even more enthusiasm.  As if saying it once again with emphasis might somehow convey the significance of this unusual coincidence.

“Yes it is,” Candace maintained her smile, beginning to wonder if perhaps Jillian wasn’t overdoing the surprise reaction.  “I’m so glad that you like it.”

“I just wrote about spirograph patterns in my journal!  And here you are with a piano bench cushion riddled with the design!”

“Well,” Candace remarked in her usual manner of calm authority.  “When was the last time that we used the word ’spirograph’ on two separate and unrelated occasions?  And all within a matter of days, too.  “Spirograph’ is not exactly a word that you hear in a sentence every day.”

Indeed.  Jillian was thrilled that her revelation regarding energy patterns and spirograph designs had just been confirmed by one of the most  insightful and gifted Light Energy Workers that she had the pleasure of knowing (as well as the privilege of being related to).

It had been this unusual sequence of events that had led to Jillian’s focused determination to procure an original spirograph toy.  In her mind, it had to be just like the one that she had used back in the late 1960’s.  Since her original set was now lost somewhere on the planet, she had spent the past week searching on eBay for just the right one.  It had to include a complete set of plastic design wheels, of course.  An original instruction manual was necessary, too.  And for the sake of accurate representation, the enclosed tray that held all of the pieces had to be red, not blue.  If the original box was in decent shape, that would be a plus.

Jillian had spent the past few days placing bids on all of the sets currently up for auction that met the established criteria.  After babysitting most of her bids throughout the evening, she was feeling rather irritable that she continued to be outbid within the last few seconds of each and every single one.  It seemed that there would be no turning back as her frustration continued to mount.

“Damn it!” she hissed.  “Why the hell are these people foiling me?!  I want my spirograph!”

With one suitable set left to procure, Jillian threw common sense out the window and increased her maximum bid to a ridiculous amount.  It never occurred to her that there could be more vintage spirograph sets listed in the near future.  Burning desire replaces all reason and logic at two o’clock in the morning.

Jillian heard some rustling behind her, and looked up from her eBay trance in time to see her husband emerge from behind the bedroom door.

“What are you doing?” Durwood wanted to know.

Blind ambition was impossible to explain.  Jillian knew that Durwood would define her current mission as yet another “moonbat” moment, so she decided to lie to him in order to save time and certain eye-rolling.

“I can’t sleep,” she heard herself say.  “So I’m just doing a little Internet shopping.”

There were approximately three minutes left on this last auction.  Jillian wanted nothing more than for Durwood to go back to bed and leave her alone.

“Don’t stay up too late,” he muttered. “And don’t spend any money.”

“Yeah, okay,” Jillian answered.  Like either of those things were going to happen.

“Perhaps there are other members of my generation who just realized the significance of our treasured spirograph toys,” Jillian considered.  She was now absolutely convinced that fellow human beings who spent hours using their spirograph toys as children were practicing energy patterns in order to remember how vibrational frequency really works.

That, or she was constantly being outbid by vintage toy collectors who may simply be interested in turning a profit with resale.  Not everyone was at home in the wee hours of the morning formulating an elaborate and far-fetched theory on energy movement.  And just what was she going to do with an old spirograph toy, anyway?

“It doesn’t matter,” Jillian decided.  “I’ll figure it out after I have one.”

It seemed almost silly that her heart was racing as the countdown approached the last minute.  When her palms begin to sweat, she realized how ridiculous it was that she was so damn excited.  A click of the refresh tab revealed that there were 15 seconds left.  She still had the winning bid.

“Here we go,” she tried not to burst from anticipation.  She felt like a ten-year-old.

Jillian squeezed her eyes shut and silently counted the remaining seconds.  Relatively certain that the auction had ended, she hesitated momentarily before hitting the refresh command.

As if viewing the screen would be less shocking with a single eye, Jillian slowly opened one eyelid to peer at the result.

“Pay now” was all she needed to see.

Because one is never enough, Jillian proceeded to win four more auctions for vintage spirograph sets over the course of the next few weeks.  She has since distributed her winning items among a few of her beloved peers, Candace included.

Ask a small group of 49 and 50 year old people what they are doing with their vintage spirograph sets, and they will likely tell you that they are having fun reminiscing with their old toys.

Ask Jillian Bean, and she is likely to tell you that playing with her spirograph is a reminder for those of us who pursue self-expansion and change.  She would say that for too many years we have entertained a tendency to define our expansion as a linear path.  Jillian would remind us that most of us have always described our spiritual connection to Divine Source as a constant desire to venture forward, when any former spirograph kid knows that Divine Source comes from within, and that our power to create vibrational harmony between ourselves and the Universe swirls outward in millions of beautiful patterns that travel in every possible direction.

Journeying through life all this time just to remember that we are the ones that we have been waiting for was well worth the adventure.

I’m so appreciative that you gave me a Spirograph set. It’s just like the one I had as a kid. It’s a reminder that the new energy is something that’s best experienced with a joyful and playful heart.

I can picture the scene! LOL

How very creative you are!! I had’nt thought about a spirograph since I last saw one, which was many many moons’ ago. What a great match the energy we borrow and use resembles those familiar patterns. Everything we say and do carries energy, even words and symbols you write on a piece of paper. Alot of times we do sabatoge ourselves with negativity and the wrong kind of thinking.
